What is IGCSE?

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally recognised qualification, taken at the Class 10 level, similar to the Class 10 examinations of the CBSE and ICSE. Cambridge Board conducts examination at the end of school years, forms curriculum, suggests resources and methodologies.

Which Board conducts the IGCSE Exam?

The Cambridge Assessment International Education, U.K. conducts this exam in all schools imparting IGCSE education all over the world.

Who can appear for this exam?

Entry is possible at the level of grade 3, 6,7, 8, 9 or 11

The Cambridge International Board conducts examination thrice a year-March [only for India], June and November.

How many subjects are there for IGCSE?

Cambridge International offers 70 subjects. Student must select a minimum of five subjects and more subjects can be added as per his/her choice and future career options.

How are the subjects selected? Can these be based on career choices to be made later on?

  • Student can choose between core and extended curriculum by selecting Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • This gives students of all ability levels the freedom to choose subjects that are right for them and, thereby, the opportunity to score good grades.
  • The core curriculum is an overview of the subject and is suitable for students who are expected to achieve grades C to G. If the child is interested in a more challenging curriculum, the extended curriculum is for her. This extended curriculum is for students who are expected to achieve grades A+ to C.

What is the medium of instruction for IGCSE?

Since IGCSE is valid globally, all instruction is only in English. Other languages may be taken as an additional subject.

How is IGCSE different from other boards?

IGCSE is student-centric; it focuses on knowledge and making the mind creative for learning. The syllabus is focused on applications rather than learning theory only.

Which are the recommended books for IGCSE subjects?

IGCSE does not have standard textbooks like many other boards. Students can refer the most recommended books for their subjects. There is a wide range of learning things the better way. IGCSE encourages different learning formats.

What are the advantages of IGCSE course over other boards?

  • There is a vast range of subjects and subjects are not compartmentalized into streams like science, commerce or arts.

What are the disadvantages of IGCSE course?

  • This course will be many times more expensive then other state and central boards.
  • Medium of instruction is only English. So if a child intends to study in IGCSE, the sooner she joins this board, the better.
  • If you intend to do engineering, medicine, architecture or similar professional courses in India, then it may be better to look at state and central boards as they are more oriented towards the entrance exams of these professional courses.
