Is IIT The Only Option for Engineering Education?

The IIT JEE Main and Advanced entrance exams are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Students appearing for these exams are eligible for admissions to premier engineering institutions in India like the IITs, NITs and IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology). There is no disputing the fact that these are the most prestigious engineering institutions in India. The number of students who appear for these exams is extremely large and the success ratio is very small. Lakhs of students spend their time, money and energy, joining coaching institutes, but not everyone gets in.

But should you be disappointed if you don’t get into IITs? No. There are many private engineering colleges which provide excellent education and placement, and their entrance exams are not very difficult to crack.

Here is a list of these alternative exams for engineering college admissions. This list will be updated regularly.

BITS Pilani: The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (Rajasthan) conducts the BITSAT online admission test for admissions to their 4-year integrated first-degree programme (undergraduate level). BITS has centres in India in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. They also have a campus in Dubai. Visit the website at https://www.bits-pilani.ac.in/

Vellore Institute of Technology’s VITEEE: VIT has been ranked among the top 20 Universities in India for the 4th time consecutively and in Engineering, VIT has been ranked 15th in India. This exam is held in online mode. Please check the website at https://vit.ac.in/BTechAdmissions/.

Tolani Maritime Institute Science Aptitude Test TMISAT: TMISAT is conducted by Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI) for admissions to its BTech programmes in Marine Engineering and BSc in Nautical Technology. Those interested can apply at the official website – http://www.tmi.tolani.edu/admission/apply-now/.

SRM University: This university conducts its own entrance exam called SRMJEE for admissions to BTech courses. Website: http://www.srmist.edu.in/admission-india/

Manipal Institute of Technology: The Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal was established in 1957 as one of the first self-financing engineering colleges in the country. MIT undertakes sponsored research programs supported by funding agencies such as DST, CSIR, AICTE, and the Ministry of Environmental Sciences. Admission is through the Manipal Entrance Test (MET). Check for details on https://manipal.edu/mu.html

If you have information on other private universities conducting BE or BTech courses, or your experiences with their admission process, entrance exams, please share those here.
