The origins of the K, L, M, and N shells in atomic structure trace back to Charles Glover Barkla’s 1911 X-ray experiments. Barkla’s cautious labeling in the middle of the alphabet prevented future confusion. Later, Walther Kossel linked these labels to Niels Bohr’s quantum model, merging historical discovery with scientific terminology.
