With your experience of 5 years in automotive industry, you have a good domain knowledge. Your core competencies are in automotive industry. Switching out of automobile industry and into IT field as Python developer may take time and may not be useful in the long run. Here is the option:

Automobile industry is in for some major changes like:

  • driverless cars,
  • electric vehicles,
  • GPS vehicle tracking,
  • vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and many more.

So this is going to be an exciting field to watch out in the 2020s. Now, with your experience of 5 years in automobile industry AND interest in IT and programming, you have an edge over many others. Stay in automobile domain, learn how technology is being integrated with vehicles, and see how you can apply knowledge of IT in vehicles of this decade. Over a long term, I feel that automobile sector will see some sweeping changes and there will be plenty of scope for innovation.
