Stay Healthy To Study Well

For some, exam time is a festival of studies. But for most students, exam time can be very stressful and demanding on physical and mental strength. While it is important that you, the student, should devote more time to studies as exams approach, it is also true that you have to take care of your health during this time. Many students experience a breakdown due to the tremendous stress they experience during exam time. Would you like a situation where you have studied the whole year and prepared for the exam only to find that during the exam period you are not 100% physically or mentally fit? Obviously not. So lets see what precautions you must take to remain healthy and alert and be fit to give your exams.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water. While studying, keep a bottle of water near you so that you can take a few sips every 10-15 minutes. Drink about 8-10 glasses of water. You can also take coconut water, fresh fruit juice (canned juice is strict no-no), milk shakes. If drinking tea and coffee help you to stay awake and focussed, you may drink 2-3 cups throughout the day. Aerated drinks are strictly to be avoided. Also avoid chilled water and anything cold straight from the refrigerator.
  • Eat healthy food: Never, ever, miss your breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day. Home-cooked food is the healthiest. Avoid fried food items. Dry fruits kept near your study table can be very helpful and these are a good source of energy too. So, no ordering food from restaurants. Raw salads, green vegetables, and your usual daily meals are enough. Don’t overeat due to anxiety. Don’t under-eat; time spent on eating is not time wasted, it is essential. Munch your food properly, instead of swallowing it. Dinner can be light so that you don’t fall asleep very soon.
  • Munching: Snacks can also be healthy and prove to be good sources of energy for the body. But snacks have to be chosen wisely. Try fruits like bananas, grapes, strawberry, or peanuts. Absolutely avoid chocolates, ice-creams and other desserts. Those for for after your exams are over!
  • Keep yourself fresh: If it helps, take bath twice a day – morning and evening/night, preferably with warm water. Brush your teeth twice twice a day. Salt water gargling at least once a day will keep your throat free from any infections.
  • Keep yourself in cheerful mood: Don’t worry unnecessarily. While a certain amount of stress is necessary for us to achieve our targets, don’t ponder too much and don’t go into flash-back mode. Live in the moment. Prepare for tomorrow.
  • Sleep: This cannot be over-emphasized. Sleep is essential for your brain. When you sleep, you are not wasting time. Our brain is like a computer and it too needs to be rebooted so that it works properly. Go to sleep at a fixed time everyday and get up at a fixed time. Your mobile phone has a very useful feature – the alarm clock. How many hours of sleep do you need? There are no formula for that but generally about 8 hours sleep is needed to give rest to our brain and body. If you can manage with 6-7 hours, good for you, but not less than that.
  • Digital Detox: Detach yourself from your mobile phone, computer, and other electronic devices – You will be surprised at the number of difficulties and doubts your friends have during exam time and just a day before the exam. Keep your mobile phone off so that you are not distracted by the continuous phone calls, SMS, and WhatsApp notifications, etc. Keep the phone away from you. Remember, “out of sight, out of mind”. So your phone should not even be in your room where you sit down to study. Study from a notebook or text book, instead of computer/laptop. Its faster, more focussed and less tiring that way.

Hope these tips help you better prepare for the exams. All the best.
